I really appreciate the points you’re bringing out in this post.
I think making public a person’s number of followers & following creates an uneasy competition on twitter. After all, how cool would it be to say you have as many followers as your favorite celeb? :)
Bragging aside, it’s important for us to remember that adding value is not a one-way process. How many people can we really help, get to know & befriend through tweets we bark @ our audience periodically? The true quality is in interaction with & appreciation of 100, 1000 or 10,000 followers.

At about 400, I realized that I wasn’t going to “hear” everything, or even close to everything “said” to me by the people I was following.

So when I see that someone has thousands of followers, I realize they are not likely to hear much of what I say. They are more interested in being heard.

I’m trying to walk a fine line between having a solid number of followers and still being able to interact with people, not just get them to listen to me. Hm, it takes some work!
