Building community, building economy, and/or both?

in Building Community, Creative Life

When I first learned of the Westwood Station project, I was really impressed. Developers are spending a massive amount of money to essentially build a city in my town. So far discussion has been purely in economic terms. I believe the general idea to to something like Santana Row in San Jose (I used to live near that before it was built; I have no idea if it turned out to be as “cool” as it looks).

My question is whether this will be a big step in the right direction or a small one. Clearly it is better than building a Walmart or leaving the area to remain the industrial wasteland that it currently is. But is it just going to be a fancy shopping town or will it incubate a new, more vibrant community? There is nothing wrong with the Town of Westwood, but self-proclaimed “cool” people like me work in Boston and sleep in Westwood. It would be great to plant the seeds of some form of creative urbanization in our town.
