Close to Home: Needham Murder

in Local to Boston

Two years ago we moved to Westwood from Needham. We were only in Needham for about 3 1/2 years, after relocating to Massachusetts from California in 2002, and we had barely met our neighbors, but we had become friends with Bob Moore, who lived in the house right next door. He let me borrow his snow thrower during the winter and we would chat about stuff out there on weekends doing yard work. He was a great guy. He and his wife were the first people to welcome us to the neighborhood and were always offering to babysit our newborn daughter.

On Friday, Bob was murdered by a man who was installing a sprinker system. Helicopters hovered over the house we used to live in and the news was full of video of his house, with our former home in the background. What can you say? It’s everyone’s worst nightmare. It’s not a burglary or some random home invasion…and his daughter-in-law (also beaten, but in fair condition) and 20-year old grandson were there while this happened at lunch time. This is the kind of thing that could happen to anyone, anyplace, anytime, no matter how careful you are. I can only speculate that the workman just plain snapped.
