I liked the part about how you looked over your interviewer's resume when talking on the phone.

Something that I have done is see who the "shared" connections are and contact them first. By doing that and being actually "introduced" (online or off) it will appear as I've been "vouched" for and "come in peace.

Your experiment was very good and you used a place or thing (relationship to MIT) but I bet if you came at them with something like, "Hi Jim, Mary Smith thought I should talk to you.." then naturally it would of taken the convo to a more personal and trusting one.

I find that though Social Networking is extremely powerful we must use it as a tool to get more personal with our recruiters or candidates.

Dave, great post. I have also been looking for work in the last 6 weeks, and have had great success using linkedin. As you noted, I can research people & companies and get in touch directly with recruiters and hiring managers.

One other big point about linkedin: once a I find a position I like, I can see if anyone I know knows someone at the company I might work at. grat way to get 'in'.

the idea about following someone on twitter is a good one, thanks for the tip
