This article in today’s New York Times describes how the use of melamine as a protein substitute in animal feed is apparantly an open secret in China. The demand for melamine to put in feed now exceeds the demand for urea. I’m not making this up.

“People use melamine scrap to boost nitrogen levels for the tests,” said the manager of the animal feed factory. “If you add it in small quantities, it won’t hurt the animals.”
